Get to Know Us

NEMA is a pivotal advocate for multiculturalism within the North East Victoria region, supporting new and established migrant and refugee communities across five Local Government Areas (LGAs): Wangaratta, Indigo, Alpine, Benalla, and Mansfield.

NEMA fosters a sense of belonging and unity among culturally diverse populations and recognises the importance of celebrating and honouring the rich cultural tapestry that enriches our community. As an organisation, we encourage the CALD community to use local services, both professional and personal,  to address the diverse needs of our constituents and empower individuals to thrive in their new environment.

Together we celebrate, connect and support cultural growth with social gatherings, cultural festivities and events that are inclusive of migrant or minority communities. Harmony Day, Diwali, Songkran, Cherry Blossom Festival, La Fiera, Teeyan, Chinese New Year, Children’s Week and Senior’s Week are our success stories and create strong relationships.

NEMA draws strength from its diverse membership base, leveraging the collective wisdom, experiences and perspectives of its constituents to drive meaningful change. Our community engagement initiatives, coupled with effective advocacy for multicultural issues, further solidify our role for inclusivity and cohesion within the North East Victoria region.

History

Our History

The North East Multicultural Association (NEMA) was established in February 2005 was established in 2005 as one of 8 ethnic councils in Victoria. Representing the North East region, it caters for The Rural City of Wangaratta, Benalla, including Alpine, Mansfield and Indigo Shires.
NEMA formed the initiative of Wangaratta Councillor Rozi Parisotto. Rozi was raised in the North East and witnessed her widowed Italian mother’s frustrations managing life and family in the absence of suitable cultural supports. With migrants in the region from other cultures similarly in need she set about establishing a ‘Voice for Multiculturalism in North East Victoria’ ; the collaborative efforts of the five LGAs making it possible for NEMA to provide assistance and support for existing and new migrants in the north east and those considering migrating.
As NEMA President, Rozi occupied the role from NEMA’s inception until mid 2013. NEMA was officially launched at The Wangaratta Art Gallery on 12 September 2005.
