NEMA Archived Projects

From 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2015, the North East Multicultural Aged Care Connections Project (NEMACC) worked within the Victorian local government areas of Alpine, Indigo, Wangaratta, Benalla and Mansfield. The intention of the Project was always to provide sustainable outcomes for our communities across the 5 LGAs.

NEMA is pleased to state that many of our contacts with isolated and at risk elderly people resulted in an increased capacity for them to make informed choices about their current and future health needs. This was achieved through hard work to ensure that there were social opportunities for marginalised CALD people to socialise and learn about the health services and supports available to them.

To compliment this, NEMACC was able to construct a broad network of Cultural Advocates who are equipped to provide important health information to community members. This was especially relevant given the introduction of the Federal Government’s ‘My Aged Care’ program - the main entry point for accessing Home and Community Care and other aged services. Given that ‘My Aged Care’ has a phone assessment service, this potentially presented challenges to many of the CALD community. Therefore, the role and support of NEMA and the Cultural Advocates was critical in achieving fair outcomes for older CALD community members. The ability of the Cultural Advocates to connect with a broad range of service providers also ensured that information was effectively distributed to the community.

Through the social groups and other achievements established under the NEMACC project, NEMA is well placed to provide a broad range of information to all of our communities. This is particularly important for those who were previously excluded due to social isolation, language barriers and broader cultural issues.

Service providers have been accepting of the need to provide real ‘inclusion’ for their communities while structures such as the Community Health Advisory Committees (which are active in Alpine Shire), provide a forum for CALD concerns to be aired and addressed.

Throughout the project, there were many initiatives and personal support activities undertaken by NEMACC staff. NEMA was extremely pleased with the dedication of its staff to ensure the best possible outcomes for our communities.
